36 Crime has considerable experience and expertise at all levels acting in complex, high-profile and sensitive public inquiries, investigations and reviews including, Grenfell Tower Inquiry, Undercover Policing Inquiry, Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry, UK Covid-19 Inquiry, Independent Isle of Man Covid Review. This includes as counsel to the Inquiry and on behalf of a range of Core Participants.
Members of the 36 Crime team also provide the highest quality advice, representation and advocacy in coronial proceedings and are experts in the procedure and case law of the coroner’s jurisdiction.
We represent the full range of Interested Persons, including bereaved families, corporate bodies and companies, police forces, local authorities, NHS trusts, emergency services, the Health and Safety Executive and governmental and quasi-governmental bodies.
The team has substantial experience in Article 2 inquests, where there is an issue of state obligation to protect life. We also deal with complex and long-running inquests both with and without juries and complicating legal and evidential challenges.
We are also adept at dealing with the most sensitive and grave circumstances, including deaths of children and highly vulnerable
persons and where there are concerns regarding acts and omissions by state authorities.
36 Crime deals with hearings arising from a variety of circumstances, including medical and care settings, for example, surrounding the use of “Do Not Resuscitate” protocols and deaths during or following interaction with mental health services; deaths in custody including following restraint; and multi-death inquests. We often advise at an early stage in proceedings.
We are also experienced in acting in challenges to coroner’s decisions.
