We are delighted to announce that Jennifer Zhou is the winner of the Annual
36 Group Oral Advocacy Competition and Kirit Singh is winner of the written competition.
Jennifer is studying the Bar Course at City University and was a Law Conversion student.
Kirit completed the Bar Course at City, University of London in September 2024.
Jennifer says: “It was a pleasure to compete in this year’s Oral Advocacy competition. The rounds were varied and interesting; I got to try my hand at different stages of a criminal trial, from the opening speech to the plea in mitigation. The highlight was getting to spend a week shadowing members of the Public Law group – the competitive nature of The 36 Group’s mini-pupillage certainly sets it apart.”
Kirit says: “The competition has been a simultaneously challenging and rewarding experience. Challenging in that each round presented different issues and new offences. But this was equally rewarding because it improved my legal arguments and skills. The prize of a mini was the icing on the cake.”
Christopher Donnellan K.C., joint Head of Chambers says, “We congratulate the overall winners of the 36 Group Advocacy Competition, Jennifer Zhou in Oral Advocacy and Kirit Singh in Written Advocacy. They were the winners from the many quality entrants to the competition and each provided advocacy of the very highest standards. Jennifer and Kirit have now completed their mini pupillages, and we are pleased that they enjoyed the experience and had a valuable insight into our work at the Bar.”
Pranjal Shrotri, Head of ESG at The 36 Group, says “We are keen to extend mini-pupillage opportunities to the widest range of applicants (aged over 18) who may be considering a career at the bar. We have an open competition for these, and the applications are judged on the merit of the advocacy submissions alone. Jennifer and Kirit were very well-deserved winners of the last competition, and we look forward to receiving entries for our latest competition, which is now live.”
Our 2025 competition is now live. For full details, including application materials and how to apply, click here. The deadline is Tuesday 1 April.
