For our next instalment of Stone Stories, we are pleased to introduce Isuru Devendra. Isuru joined 36 Stone in January 2025 and is an international arbitration and public international law specialist with extensive experience acting as counsel in both commercial and investor-State arbitrations.
We asked Isuru to share some of his thoughts and interests beyond his work as Counsel.
What is a common myth about your job or field of expertise?
There seems to be a common belief that to be a good lawyer you need to be argumentative. However, in my experience the best lawyers are those who are able to look beyond the arguments, think strategically and find solutions that work for their client.
What cause are you passionate about?
I am passionate about universal access to quality education. Education is an incredibly powerful tool and I strongly believe that every child, irrespective of their circumstances or characteristics, should have access to a quality education.
Dead or alive, which famous person would you most like to have dinner with, and why?
Nelson Mandela. He was renowned for his great intellectual, physical and moral strength as well as his excellent sense of humour. The dinner conversation would no doubt cover a broad range of subjects and make for an unforgettable evening.
At what time of day do you get your best work done?
I’m a morning person, although often aided by a good coffee.
What occupation (other than your own) would you like to try?
Being a professional cricketer has always been my dream, but a lack of cricketing ability led me to the law. While I have no complaints, a century at the MCG on Boxing Day would be nice!
