This week, the UK–EU Agreement in respect of Gibraltar was signed, establishing a new and comprehensive legal framework for Gibraltar’s relationship with the European Union. The Treaty seeks to facilitate the movement of people and goods across the Gibraltar–Spain border, provide long-term economic and legal certainty, and support cooperation across areas including mobility, customs, taxation, transport and law enforcement, while safeguarding British sovereignty and the autonomous operation of UK military facilities.
Shahead Ghani Miah was instructed by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office to work on the legal scrub of the Treaty, including the detailed legal review and refinement of its provisions. His instruction also extended to the Administrative Arrangements and other legal material associated with the Treaty and its implementation.
Before joining the Bar, Shahead worked extensively on international treaty negotiations across the UK Government. His experience includes the United Kingdom’s negotiations with the European Union concerning citizens’ rights, mobility, social security coordination, and civil and judicial cooperation. He has a longstanding professional and academic interest in public international law.
Shahead’s practice encompasses all areas of public and human rights law, and he is regularly instructed in matters with an international dimension.
