Mary Prior KC awards Elizabeth Muir a red bag

Elizabeth Muir

Mary Prior KC, Head of 36 Crime, is pictured awarding Elizabeth Muir a red bag for her exceptional work in a complex child cruelty, starvation and suffocation case which involved an exceptionally vulnerable young mother being accused of abuse of her tiny baby within a hospital environment. Elizabeth and Mary were parachuted into the case at the last minute when both previously instructed Counsel returned the case.

Mary said “This case was a real challenge, Liz worked tirelessly to go through the medical notes and to discover that the notes were not accurately reflected in the statements. Significant errors had been made at the hospital and the facts were very different from the theory of the case. The case involved complex expert evidence and the requirement to challenge many medical practitioners. Working together as a team, we managed to gain the trust of this mother, rewrite the narrative from an abusive cruel mother to the reality of a highly vulnerable mother who was penalised for her determination to get adequate treatment for her child.”

Exceptional skill such as this must be recognised with a red bag.
