Rhys specialises in financial remedies. He is a leading expert and a very experienced advocate in this field and related areas of law. Many of Rhys’ cases involve complex questions relating to the involvement of third parties and how their property or commercial rights relate to the parties’ financial remedy claim. Many of his cases have an international dimension with assets or parties located in different jurisdictions.
Rhys has a much sought after expertise concerning pensions on divorce, having been a founder member of the Pension Advisory Group. He also a co-author of the leading textbook in the area, Pensions on Divorce: A Practitioner’s Handbook (Class Legal, 4th edition, Hess, Taylor, Rainer and Galbraith).
Aside from advocacy in court, Rhys sits part-time as a Recorder (Family) and is authorised to sit as a Deputy High Court Judge (Family Division).
Rhys is a seasoned family arbitrator having delivered numerous awards involving long and complex hearings. Rhys is a mediator and also a much sought after Private FDR evaluator. Rhys has a long-standing interest in Non-Court Dispute Resolution. He combines his wide experience to deliver accessible private tribunal hearings to help bring about solutions. As a member of the Family Procedure Rule Committee, he has been instrumental in the 2024 amendments introduced to the Family Procedure Rules, Part 3 and Part 28 in respect of Non-Court Dispute Resolution and the revised Financial Remedies Pre-Action Protocol.
Away from his advocacy and private tribunal work, Rhys’ knowledge and expertise in the law is reflected by his involvement as a contributing editor to the Family Court Practice (“Red Book”). He is also the editor and vice-chair of the Financial Remedies Journal, which is an essential resource for the profession. He writes and lectures widely, including to the Judicial College.

Rhys has extensive experience in dealing with complex financial remedy claims. He has expertise in dealing with cases involving non-disclosure, complex or novel assets, commercial assets, partnerships, valuation issues, liquidity issues, competing property or commercial claims by third parties, pensions and enforcement. He has extensive experience of constructive trust and estoppel type claim claims, particularly in the farming context.

Rhys’s philosophy is to seek a consensual solution to problems in the first instance, and he will go the extra mile with his clients in seeking out a resolution. Many of Rhys’ cases settle at a private FDR. There are some cases, however, which require a contested determination and where settlement options have been exhausted Rhys understands well the dynamics of a fully contested hearing, whether conducted before an arbitrator or judge in court.
Non-Court Dispute Resolution forms a significant part of Rhys’s practice, whether in his role as a private tribunal (evaluator or arbitrator), mediator or indeed as an advocate in that context.
