Karen practises in immigration, public law, human rights and housing.

Karen is regularly instructed in bail, asylum, deport and private immigration matters. She represents clients in appeal hearings in the First and Upper Tier Tribunals, and drafts grounds and advices in the area. She frequently works with victims of trafficking and torture, and in cases where capacity is in issue.

Karen has been instructed in a number of judicial review cases in the Upper Tribunal and Administrative Court, and false imprisonment claims and prison law human rights cases in the County Court.

Karen also accepts instruction in housing and property cases, acting for both landlords and tenants in possession and disrepair claims. She has also acted in cases concerning TOLATA, including in multi-day final hearings.

Key cases

ADL and Ors v SSHD [2024] EWHC 994 (Admin): Karen appeared in the High Court (led by Chris Buttler KC) in this case concerning the legality of the imposition of GPS monitoring on four Claimants as conditions of their immigration bail. Karen was subsequently instructed in the damages claim for the period of unlawful tagging for one of the Claimants, an issue that had not been previously addressed by the Court.

HG v SSHD UI-2025-002005: Karen represented the Appellant at an error of law hearing in the Upper Tribunal, a Turkish asylum seeker in his fresh claim on basis of imputed support for PKK. The appeal concerned the application of Devaseelan principles and the country guidance case). The appeal was allowed on all grounds. Karen has also represented the Appellant in the First Tier Tribunal.

KS v SSHD UI-2024-005996: Karen successfully represented the Appellant, an Ethiopian asylum seeker, in his error of law hearing at the Upper Tribunal, concerning the approach to scarring evidence and credibility. Karen has also represented the Appellant in the First Tier Tribunal.

HRS v SSHD UI-2023-004132: Karen represented an Iranian asylum seeker in his error of law hearing in the Upper Tribunal. After the Tribunal partially allowed the Appellant’s appeal, Karen also represented him in the rehearing of the appeal, which was granted.

Craig Redmond v Cherwell District Council [2024] UKFTT 444 (GRC): Karen represented the Respondent council in this appeal regarding the enforcement of penalty notices under the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015.

Areas of expertise

Karen regularly acts for both Claimants and Defendants in possession, disrepair, service charge and other property claims. She has acted in claims involving issues of TOLATA and proprietary estoppel.

Karen has represented a number of prisoners in both trespass/human rights act/equality act claims and in applications for judicial review.

Prior to coming to the bar, Karen was employed as a public law caseworker. She worked on a number of high profile public law cases in a variety of courts, including the High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights. These included challenges to the legality of the Detained Fast Track Rules, which fast-tracked asylum claims for applicants in immigration detention, and challenges to the time-limit on the support provided by the Home Office to victims of trafficking. A number of these challenges were brought on an urgent basis. Karen also worked on several unlawful detention and false imprisonment cases, and human rights claims.
