Sebastian Walker prosecuted an insurance manager for a series of insurance frauds committed over nearly a decade. The frauds related to both fraudulent insurance claims and the fraudulent selling of insurance policies. Sentencing the defendant to five years and three months’ imprisonment after plea HHJ Boyle found there were actual losses in the region of £500,000 to £600,000 and risked losses from the fraud of up to £10 million.

The human impact of the frauds was demonstrated by the substantial uninsured losses suffered by individuals who had believed themselves to be genuinely insured: one of whose property was turned into a cannabis grow, and another of whom suffered significant fire, water and subsidence damage to their property. Victims also included a horse riding school who found it had been uninsured for years with HHJ Boyle observing it was “only good fortune that prevented catastrophic liabilities being uninsured”.

Sebastian was instructed in this case from the pre-charge stage by Juliet Hardy (now of London Homicide). The investigation was led by the City of London’s specialist Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department.
