Samuel Skinner KC and Sarah Knight, instructed by the CPS East Midlands Complex Casework Unit, prosecuted a police Detective Chief Inspector for causing death by dangerous driving.
The defendant, DCI Michael Cooper, drove an unmarked police vehicle into two parked cars, killing one pedestrian standing nearby and seriously injuring another. Last week, Mr Justice Sweeting jailed the former senior police officer. The prosecution was very complex because Samuel and Sarah needed to advise in detail about the effect of expert medical evidence in cardiology and neurology. Samuel and Sarah also marshalled further evidence from experts in collision reconstruction, mobile telephone data, and CCTV time drift. The High Court Judge thanked all counsel for their presentation of the facts.
