Ben undertakes and advises on all areas of taxation, commercial litigation and company law.
Ben has spent the last 5 years practising as a barrister across taxation and commercial litigation in both Australia and the UK. Prior to that, Ben spent 10 years as a taxation lawyer at the Big 4 consulting firms and as an in-house tax lawyer at HSBC, JP Morgan, UBS and BlackRock. Ben undertook tax due diligence and gave complex tax advice on numerous transactions ranging in size from £300 million to more than £1 billion. He also advised on complex structured tax transactions and on the tax aspects of securities lending and collateral management transactions.
Ben advises on all aspects of estate planning and litigation concerning inheritance tax and cross-border tax issues arising for trusts and individuals, including offshore trusts and non-resident individuals.
Ben also has extensive experience with transfer pricing and advises on all aspects of transfer pricing issues and disputes.
Ben is also fast developing a niche practice in Cryptocurrency taxation .
Ben is the sole author of the recently published Tax Insight - Cryptocurrency and Blockchain.
It provides an outstanding overview of the UK tax treatment of cryptocurrency and is the sole publication on this topic. It provides a comprehensive background to the development of bitcoin and the application of blockchain technology.
It also presents many novel findings based on extensive research about the taxation of companies and individuals. In particular, it addresses complex issues about whether crypto profits can be tax-free on the basis that they are “gambling” profits and also addresses whether non-domiciled individuals can use the remittance basis for capital gains tax purposes.
