Dr Colin Ong QC appointed by Supreme People's Court to the ICEC of the China International Commercial Court
The Supreme People's Court of the People’s Republic of China has appointed 36 Stone member Dr Colin Ong QC to the International Commercial Expert Committee (“ICEC”) of the China International Commercial Court (“CICC”).
ICEC Expert Member duties include; presiding over mediations, settling international commercial disputes on the basis of the willingness of the parties, providing advisory opinions on specialised legal issues concerning international treaties, international commercial rules, finding and applying foreign laws involved in cases heard by the International Commercial Court and the People's Courts at all levels; providing advice and suggestions on the development of the International Commercial Court; and providing advice and suggestions on the formulation of judicial interpretations and judicial policies of the Supreme People's Court.
The CICC forms part of the Supreme People’s Court and is billed as a one-stop shop for resolving international commercial disputes of amounts of over 300 million yuan, between Chinese parties and their counterparts, through litigation, arbitration, and mediation.
Colin is the first English Silk to be appointed by the Supreme People’s Court to be a member of the ICEC of the China International Commercial Court. Sir Wiliam Blair is the first English qualified lawyer to have been appointed to the ICEC position.
The term will last for four years, from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2024.
