David Herbert QC and John Hallissey successfully prosecute 5 men accused of murdering a young man during a planned robbery in Northampton. A jury at Northampton Crown Court convicted 4 of the defendants of murder and one of manslaughter after a 6 week trial. The defendants had forced their way into the deceased's house in the middle of the night armed with knives, a machete and other weapons; the deceased was stabbed multiple times during the incident and died at the scene. During the trial the court heard that two of the defendants had previously been convicted of serious gang-related knife attacks, one with a machete, after which they had celebrated by rapping about the wounds they had inflicted on their victim.
The defendants convicted of murder received life sentences with minimum terms of 34 years, 31 years, 28 years and 28 years. The defendant convicted of manslaughter received a sentence of 14 years imprisonment.
